Fire and Index:

Vacant Space

My journey started from my fascination with fire ecology searching for a unique voice and process for my artistic identity. The disturbance of natural elements such as fire or snow is considered part of a system. The relationship between potential and connectedness defines the current state of the system. A complex adaptive systems approach by Christopher Bone provides a framework to connect, analyze, and organize mind and nature in the era of Chthulucene. The four steps of the adaptive cycle are exploitation, conservation, release, and reorganization. They are used for me to organize the destruction and reconstruction activities concerning the ecosystem in the context of Chthulucene through a mental process.

Exploration-I covered a large canvas with the snow on the floor. I lay in the snow on the canvas and made marks in the snow by moving my naked body. Then I dropped prepared Chinese Ink on the snow and let it merge. Snow entrapped with ink slowly flowed and formed organic traces. The pilling, thawing and layering of snow recorded and imprinted the time and developed a landscape structure. Finally, the emerging image was created by tracing the negative shape of the human figure.

Conservation-I developed a unique process functioning as a conversation between social development and environmental circulation: I photograph human-like forms from my hikes. Based on my collection, I place colours on a flat metal mesh and then sculpt the painted mesh into the topographic shape. Then, I use fire to transfer the pigments from the mesh onto ceramic surfaces. This process will create foggy imprints caused by the landform's topographic difference.
